Your Site Waste Management Plan

A Site Waste Management Plan (SWMP) will help achieve sustainability targets on your building or refurbishment project.

Whilst no longer a legal requirement a comprehensive SWMP may still be required for a BREEAM assessment or by the local planning authority, and are may be considered an environmentally responsible initiative by many contractors and clients.

A Site Waste Management Plan is a living document on which you record every movement of waste from your site. It should be reviewed regularly.

With everything recorded in detail, it’s much easier to see that you are hitting your environmental targets and keeping costs in check. For this reason, it’s a good idea to have a waste management plan even for your smaller-value projects.

Site Waste Management Plans typically answer the questions:

  • Who manages the waste?
  • How much waste is there?
  • When is it moved?
  • What does the waste contain?
  • Where is the waste taken to?
  • Does that depot have the appropriate permit for taking the waste?
  • How will it be managed?
