At just 21, Brian and his friend Gordon purchased a lorry with a compressor, marking the beginning of G&B. The company began hiring mobile compressors and gradually expanded across London.
G&B purchased its first yard, office and storage space in South Woodford. The company also began supplying tipper lorries to the London Borough of Newham.
The business entered the skip-hire industry by acquiring a small operation consisting of one lorry and six mini skips.
The purchase of Macks Skips in Leyton brought around 200 skips, experienced staff and access to a waste transfer station. The company began trading as GB Macks Skips.
GB achieved the WAMITAB Certificate of Technical Competence, demonstrating its commitment to professional standards, compliance and responsible waste management.
Now trading as GB Skips, the company moved to a larger Silvertown site. A waste transfer station and weighbridge were developed, alongside new clearance, waste-management and scrap-metal services.
Brian retired and Ben and Patrick officially took over the business. Their experience, energy and forward-thinking approach continued the family legacy.
The company purchased a yard in Hainault, creating what would become a key operational hub for the business.
A second waste transfer station was developed at Hainault using modern machinery, increasing efficiency and supporting higher recycling targets.
Steady growth and increasing demand strengthened the company’s market position, creating long-term stability under the next generation’s leadership.
The Leyton yard was officially purchased, securing another important asset and strengthening the company’s long-term operational capacity in London.
Office operations moved from Silvertown to Hainault Business Park. The company also launched its nationwide brokerage service, beginning its expansion into a UK-wide waste-management network.
New team members joined the growing brokerage division, helping to expand the company’s national coverage and operational capability.
Rapid growth brought eight new team members and a significant increase in clients across the UK, strengthening the company’s nationwide reputation.
Continued team growth and an expanding range of services have transformed the business into a full-service waste-management provider operating far beyond traditional skip hire.

1st April 2026
Reflecting its transformation, the company officially rebranded from G&B Compressor Hire Ltd to GB Recycling Group — a name that represents its modern identity, broader services, and nationwide reach.

Our milestones

1972
GB Skips HeritageSTART OF G&B –

Aged 21, Brian already knew he wanted to start his own business. With his friend Gordon, he bought a lorry with a compressor. That was the start of G&B – ‘Gordon and Brian’. Eventually it became G&B Compressor Hire. He hired out mobile compressors, and as his business grew, he acquired more and more lorries.

1985
We purchased our first yard office and storage space in South Woodford, and started supplying tipper lorries to the London Borough of Newham.

1986
Our business changed, leading to a change in direction to skip hire. We bought up a mini-skip hire business of one lorry and 6 mini skips.

1995
We purchased our Macks Skips in Leyton. They had about 200 skips and key admin staff and drivers, trading by this time as GB Macks Skips.

“This was a substantial move for us,” says Brian. “It significantly changed the way in which we carried on business. Before, we had simply hired out our skips and paid others to tip our waste into their site. Now we had our own waste transfer station to collect waste before it went to landfill.”

2000

GB gains the WAMITAB (Waste Management Industry Training and Advisory Board) Certificate of Technical Competence.

2007

Trading as GB Skips, we moved to our current Silvertown base, setting up and equipping a complete waste transfer station, installing a weighbridge, employing new staff and exploring new lines of business. These included rubbish clearance, waste management and scrap metal dealing.

2013

Keen to attract customers from a wider geographical base, we opened our second waste transfer station in Roebuck Road, Hainault. State-of-the-art equipment means we can handle waste efficiently to help us meet and exceed our target of 85% recycling.

2014
This year we are confident that an upturn in the economy will bring in a new customer base as people start to clear their old homes and offices and make fresh starts. Long overdue building works are getting started at last – their sites will all need careful waste management. Brian and Sheila can step back happy that their growing family business is in the safe hands of their children.

Skip Lorry Driver

On the front line of delivering our waste management services across London, our Skip Lorry Drivers require an HGV Class 2 driving licence and experience of skip loading and unloading. As customer-facing personnel, our drivers represent our business, and will be reliable, friendly, flexible and approachable, with good communication skills to deal with customers.

Weighbridge Operator

Responsible for the efficient and accurate running of the weighbridge function and all its related aspects. Our Weighbridge Operator needs to be computer literate with accurate numeracy and literacy, and an awareness of Health and Safety legislation. They will be reliable, friendly, flexible and approachable, with good communication skills to deal with both customers and hauliers.

Recycling Operative

Recycling operatives work as part of a team to sort and input the materials gathered from our waste management processes into our state-of-the-art recycling machinery. Our recycling operatives are hard-working, diligent, with a good eye for detail and awareness of health and safety regulations.
